Chief Industry Limited has successfully deployed its AC800 shaft generator liquid-cooled VFD solution on a 176,000 DWT bulk carrier project, showcasing excellent performance during both shore power commissioning and sea trials.

This innovative system features a modular architecture, seamlessly integrating three major components:

  • The shaft generator,

  • The AC800 liquid-cooled VFD cabinet, and

  • The ship’s intelligent power grid system.

With a stable power output of 850kW, the solution supports island mode operation, significantly reducing reliance on diesel generators and thereby cutting fuel costs while improving both operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Three Core Components, One Integrated Solution

  • Shaft Generator
    Co-axially driven by the propeller shaft, the generator supports a wide start-up speed range from 40rpm to 70rpm, enabling flexible and efficient power generation during vessel operation.

  • Smart VFD Core
    The AC800 VFD cabinet integrates control, drive, and liquid-cooling functions in a single compact unit, simplifying installation and maintenance.

  • Smart Shipboard Grid Platform
    The ship’s power network includes diesel gensets and an intelligent load management system, forming a responsive and resilient power grid.

🌿 Superior Energy Efficiency

The AC800 shaft generator system can stably supply 850kW to the ship’s power grid. With its island mode capabilities, it can operate independently—minimizing or even eliminating the need for diesel generators, significantly cutting fuel consumption.

Utilizing high-precision PLL (Phase-Locked Loop) technology with <5° phase deviation, the system delivers optimized voltage and frequency, effectively avoiding reverse power conditions and ensuring stable performance even in harsh maritime environments.

💡 Innovative Pre-Magnetization

The system adopts a voltage ramp pre-magnetization technique, eliminating the need for a dedicated transformer pre-charge loop and extending transformer lifespan.

Smart Grid Compatibility

Equipped with AFE four-quadrant VFD modules, the system delivers output within CCS harmonic limits (<5% voltage THD, <10% current THD), ensuring smooth operation of onboard equipment.

🌊 Adaptability to Multiple Sea Conditions

The VFD cabinet supports a wide input speed range of 40–80 rpm, and is designed to withstand shock and vibration. Even during parallel operation with diesel generators, it can start or stop high-load equipment like ballast pumps, adapting to sudden changes in electrical demand.
